Design windows and doors in Frame Studio Designer

The recorded Frame Studio training as a guided path: open the designer, draw and configure the item, then read what the design produced — versions, materials, optimisation, cost and templates.

This is the Frame Studio training recorded by the WindoorERP team, turned into a path you can follow at your own pace. The full video sits at the top of this page and carries the drawing work in detail; each stop below points at the article that explains that screen in depth.

The order is the order of a real job: open the designer where the item lives, draw the frame and set what prices it, then leave the designer and read what the design produced. The reading is short; the drawing is where the time goes.

Two rules run through the whole path. Every part you place becomes a real component that feeds the material list and the price, so a part drawn but not saved never reaches the factory. And once an order is confirmed the quotation's design is locked, so later changes belong to the production survey.

By the end you will be able to

  • Open the designer from a quotation line and from a production survey line, and know which one is still editable
  • Draw a frame, size it exactly, divide it with mullions and fill it with sashes and screens
  • Set the profile system, single or dual colour, glass and hardware brand and series for an item
  • Draw sliding doors, joined units, doors and corner units
  • Adjust a door's hardware and auxiliaries, then save the design back to the order
  • Read the design versions, the project material summary, the bar and glass optimisation and the margin
  • Save a design as a template and reuse it on a new quotation

Before you start

  • A quotation with at least one line whose product is set up for the FrameStudio Designer
  • A profile system, colours, glass and a hardware brand already configured under System
  • The Materials pages need the WinDoor Production module installed

The path

Open the designer

  1. 01 Open the design from a quotation line On a quotation, every line whose product is set up for the designer carries a pencil button, tooltipped Design. It opens Frame Studio in a new browser tab and loads the design exactly as it was last saved on that line, so you always start from the latest version of the item.   2. 02 Open the production design from the survey A production survey line carries its own copy of the design. Its form shows Original Contract Design and Production Design (Updated) side by side, with Edit Design opening the production copy in the designer. Editing here never touches the contract drawing, which is why the two can be compared before anything changes. 29 min Record a production site survey
  3. 03 Know what confirmation locks Once the sales order is confirmed, the quotation's design is locked for good. Opening the designer from the line is refused with the message Cannot modify design. Sale order is in sale state. Draw and configure the item

  1. 04 Draw the frame, divide it and fill it Pick a frame shape from the creation tools, drag it onto the grid and double-click the dimensions to type exact sizes; add mullions, then sashes and screens, which become real components of the item. Check the inside or outside indicator before any opening direction. The video shows the rest of the canvas work in detail: arches, corner joints, the equaliser, sliding doors, connectors, doors and corner units.   2. 05 Choose the profile system The system is the most consequential choice on the panel: it drives the profiles, the reinforcement, the hardware and the price. The moment you pick one the item is redrawn to its rules, for example the sash now opens inward because the system is an inward-opening one. Some sash and screen options are locked by the chosen system so that combinations that cannot be produced are never drawn.   3. 06 Choose the glass Glass is picked from the catalogue by name, with its thickness and build-up, so you choose an exact specification rather than typing properties. The extra options group holds finishes such as frosted, the usual choice for bathrooms and ground-floor rooms.   4. 07 Set the hardware brand and series Under accessories, choose the hardware brand first, because it decides which series are available. Then pick the series per opening family, casement and tilt-and-turn, sliding and so on. Read what the design produced

  1. 08 Save, then read the versions and the material summary Close the designer with the red button and confirm the save; the design goes back to the line and is analysed on the way. View Analysis Details lists every version, newest first, each with its drawing and its Component Summary, and Reuse This Design brings an older one back while the order is still a quotation. The Materials smart button on the quotation opens the project summary: materials with shortfall and Create Purchase Orders, Bar Length Optimisation, Glass Sheets, Cost with labour, Margin vs Order, Items and Profitability and Data Quality. Reuse designs

  1. 09 Save a design as a template and quote it again Any design you use often can be saved from the quotation line with Save as Template. It creates a product carrying the drawing and all its details; give it a clear name, such as the item type and size, and choose the category carefully so the template is easy to find. On a later quotation, add a line and pick the template like any other product: the item arrives with its design exactly as saved, with nothing to redraw.
