Configure product categories for valuation, costing, and removal strategies

2 min read Updated 2026-08-28 WindoorERP 19.0

What this does

Defines the hierarchical category tree for all stocked profiles, glass sheets, hardware, and finished assemblies in WindoorERP. Product categories govern three vital warehouse functions: inventory valuation accounting (Manual or Automated), costing methodology (Standard, FIFO, or Average Cost), and default logistics removal rules (FIFO or FEFO).

Before you start

  • Design a logical category hierarchy (e.g. All / Raw Materials / Profiles, All / Raw Materials / Glass, All / Raw Materials / Hardware, All / Finished Goods / Aluminium Windows).
  • Consult your finance team on the company-wide costing policy (Standard Cost vs Average Cost AVCO vs FIFO).

Steps

Hierarchical list view of product categories with valuation and costing methods.

Important

Child product categories automatically inherit the costing method, valuation mode, and accounting properties of their parent category unless explicitly overridden.

  1. 01
Open Inventory › Configuration › Products › Product Categories.
  2. 02
Click New to create a category, or select an existing parent category to add subcategories.
  3. 03
Enter the category name and assign its Parent Category to build a structured hierarchy.
  4. 04
Under Inventory Valuation, select Costing Method (e.g. Average Cost (AVCO) or First In First Out (FIFO)).
  5. 05
Select Inventory Valuation type: choose Automated for real-time general ledger balance sheet entries upon every goods receipt and dispatch.
  6. 06
Under Logistics, select the Force Removal Strategy (e.g. FIFO for profiles, or FEFO for expiring silicone sealants).
  7. 07
Specify the default Account Stock Properties: Stock Valuation Account, Stock Input Account (GRNI), and Stock Output Account.
  8. 08
    Click Save.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the Costing Method from Standard to FIFO or AVCO on an active category that already holds on-hand stock without creating an inventory valuation adjustment.
  • Leaving the Stock Input/Output accounts unassigned when Automated Inventory Valuation is selected.
